Mr Neil Oakley
Consultant Urological Surgeon

Specialist in Robotic Prostate and Kidney Surgery
Mr Neil Oakley is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and a pioneer in laparoscopic and robotic surgery for urinary tract conditions in the United Kingdom.
He holds an NHS Consultant post at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield and provides private consultations at Thornbury Hospital, Sheffield. His specialist private robotic surgery is performed at The Christie Private Care in Manchester and The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Greater Manchester.
Mr Oakley has extensive experience in robotic surgery for prostate cancer and kidney conditions. His specialist procedures include:
- Robotic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer
- Nerve-sparing robotic radical prostatectomy
- Robotic partial nephrectomy to remove a kidney tumour while preserving healthy kidney tissue where appropriate
- Robotic nephrectomy for patients who require removal of the kidney
- Robotic pyeloplasty for reconstruction of the kidney drainage system
A Pioneer in Minimally Invasive Urological Surgery
Mr Oakley's experience in minimally invasive urological surgery extends back to the development of laparoscopic techniques in the UK, before the widespread adoption of robotic surgery.
His developments in laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques for prostate and kidney operations have been published and presented internationally.
In 2001, Mr Oakley performed a live demonstration of laparoscopic nephrectomy to the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Section of Endourology. He was subsequently elected to the Executive Committee and went on to develop the BAUS UK laparoscopic training programme.
This extensive background in laparoscopic surgery provided an important foundation for his subsequent work in robotic urological surgery.
Training and Mentoring Other Urological Surgeons
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Oakley continues to train and mentor consultant colleagues and international fellows in this highly specialised area of urological surgery.
He also contributes robotic surgical expertise and advice to cancer and endourological multidisciplinary team meetings, where specialists from different disciplines review complex cases and discuss appropriate treatment strategies.
His longstanding involvement in surgical training reflects a commitment not only to performing minimally invasive surgery, but also to the continued development of specialist laparoscopic and robotic techniques within urology.
A Focused Private Robotic Surgery Practice
Mr Oakley's private surgical practice is now focused exclusively on patients considering robotic kidney surgery or robotic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
This includes patients with prostate cancer who may be suitable for robotic radical prostatectomy and nerve-sparing surgery, and patients requiring specialist robotic kidney surgery including partial nephrectomy, nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.
Not every patient with prostate cancer or kidney disease requires surgery. Consultation provides an opportunity to review the diagnosis and investigations, consider the available treatment options and determine whether robotic surgery is appropriate for the individual patient.
